Doripenem
Doripenem is a carbapenem class antibiotic used to treat complex intra-abdominal and urinary tract infections.
Doripenem is used to treat the following diseases-
Doripenem is administered as intravenous infusion. For complicated abdominal infection, the recommended dose is 500mg/8hrs for 5-14 days. For complicated UTI including polynephritis, the usual dose is 500mg/8hrs for up to 10 days.
Doripenem can cause side effects like anaphylaxis & serious hypersensitivity. It can also cause seizures. Inhalational use of doripenem can cause pneumonitis.
Severe hypersensitivity & anaphylactic reactions have been reported with Doripenem use. Seizures have also been reported. Doripenem can cause Clostridium difficile Associated Diarrhea. Treatment with antibacterial agents alters the normal flora of the colon and may permit overgrowth of C. difficile.
Contraindication
Doripenem is contraindicated in people who are hypersensitive to Doripenem or any other drugs of the beta lactam class. Due to a drug interaction, patients with seizure disorders controlled with valproic acid or sodium valproate will be at an increased risk for breakthrough seizures when treated with Doripenem concomitantly.
There is no known interaction of doripenem with food and drinks.
Doripenem is contraindicated to people with CNS disorders & seizures. People with compromised renal function should not take doripenem as it is renally excreted.
