Diminazine Aceturate

Diminazene Aceturate is classified as an anti-protozoal medication. Diminazene Aceturate acts by inhibiting the growth and multiplication of protozoa. It interferes with the nucleic acid metabolism of the parasites, leading to their destruction.

Diminazene Aceturate is indicated for the treatment of certain protozoal infections in animals, such as babesiosis and trypanosomiasis.

  • Dosage varies based on the specific protozoal infection being treated and the weight of the animal.
  • Administered by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection.

Adverse reactions may occur, with the most common listed first:

  • Local Irritation at the Injection Site
  • Transient Anorexia
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Lethargy
  • Hypersensitivity: Monitor for signs of hypersensitivity reactions, and discontinue treatment if such reactions occur. Administer with caution in animals with known hypersensitivity to the drug.
  • Injection Site Care: Use aseptic techniques during administration to minimize the risk of injection site abscess formation.
  • Renal Impairment: Use with caution in animals with renal impairment, as diminazene aceturate is excreted primarily through the kidneys.
  • Pregnancy and Lactation: Use cautiously in pregnant or lactating animals. Evaluate the risk-benefit profile before administration.
  • Use in Young Animals: Safety and efficacy in very young animals may not be established. Exercise caution when treating neonates.

Contraindication

Contraindicated in animals with a known hypersensitivity to diminazene aceturate.
