Diloxanide Furoate

Diloxanide furoate is an amoebicidal agent that exerts its activity in the large intestine. It is converted into its active form, diloxanide, which interferes with the energy metabolism of Entamoeba histolytica, leading to the inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis.

Diloxanide furoate is indicated for the treatment of asymptomatic intestinal amebiasis, as well as the prevention of relapse in patients previously treated for invasive intestinal amebiasis.

  • Adults:

    • Treatment of Asymptomatic Intestinal Amebiasis: 500 mg three times a day for 10 days.
    • Prevention of Relapse: 500 mg twice a day for 10 days.
  • Children (2 to 12 years):

    • Dosage should be adjusted based on body weight.

Common to Less Common Adverse Reactions of Diloxanide Furoate include:

  • Gastrointestinal discomfort
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Rash
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Hypersensitivity: Discontinue use if hypersensitivity reactions occur.
  • Liver Function Monitoring: Periodic liver function monitoring is advised during prolonged therapy.
  • Pregnancy and Lactation: Use cautiously during pregnancy and lactation, considering potential risks.

Contraindication

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to diloxanide furoate or any of its components.
