Procain Penicillin G
Procaine penicillin G is a beta lactam antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis. It is injected in a muscle.
Procaine penicillin is indicated for the following infections-
- Gonorrhea caused by Penicillin sensitive micro-organisms
- Endocarditis
- Gas-gangrene following amputation
- Pneumonia
- Bejel
- Pinta
- Yaws
Procaine penicillin G is available as intramuscular injections only.
Adults: 4,00,000 units once daily or twice daily.
Children: Over 25 kg as for adults; under 25 kg reduce proportionally. In severe cases dose may be doubled.
Side effects associated with procaine benzyl penicillin include-
- Injection site pain
Procaine related-
- Asthenia
- Anxiety
Penicillin related-
- Nausea
- Headache
- Rash
- Diarrhea
- Caution should be exercised during injection to avoid nerve damage.
- Some patients may show hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin. In such cases treatment should be stopped immediately.
- Superinfection of resistant organisms like C.difficile may occur.
- Dosage should be adjusted for renally impaired patients.

Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to penicillin or other beta lactam antibiotics, such as-
