Cefuroxime
Cefuroxime is a cephalosporin antibiotic and beta lactamase inhibitor. It kills bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis. It is a bactericidal antibiotic.
This medication is indicated for the following infections caused by susceptible organisms-
- Tonsilitis
- Sinusitis
- Pneumonia
- Bronchitis
- Skin infections
- Bone infections
- Sexually transmitted diseases.
- Meningitis
- Lyme disease
- Septicemia
- Cefuroxime is available as tablets, powder for suspension & parenteral.
- The usual adult oral dose for cefuroxime is 250-500 mg up to 10 days.
- Suspension should be taken with food.
How to reconstitute cefuroxime powder for suspension:
The common side effects are-
- Rash
- Nausea & vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Taste disturbances (suspension)
- Precaution should be taken when administering to patients who are taking diuretics.
- Cross reactivity may occur with cephalosporin antibiotics.
- Effects on gut flora may lower estrogen reabsorption and reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives.
Contraindication
Contraindicated in hypersensitive patients to beta lactam antibiotics such as-
