Lactitol

Lactitol is a sugar alcohol and osmotic laxative. Lactitol is not hydrolyzed by the digestive enzymes of the small intestine, and so reaches the colon relatively intact. In the colon, lactitol is fermented by bacteria, and as a result, it produces lactic acid, which increases colonic osmotic pressure and causes an influx of water into the colon. This results in an increase in stool volume and softening of stools, making it easier to pass.

Lactitol is indicated for the treatment of chronic constipation in adults, including elderly patients.

The recommended dosage of lactitol for adults is 10-20 grams per day, taken in 1-2 divided doses. The dosage should be adjusted according to the patient's response. Lactitol should be taken with plenty of fluids. The maximum daily dose is 40 grams.

Adverse reactions associated with lactitol are generally mild and transient. The most commonly reported adverse reactions include:

  • Flatulence
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Bloating

  • Lactitol should be used with caution in patients with severe hepatic impairment.
  • Lactitol should be used with caution in patients with diabetes mellitus, as it may affect blood glucose levels.
  • Lactitol should be used with caution in patients with fructose intolerance, as lactitol is a derivative of lactose and may be contraindicated in some patients with fructose intolerance.
  • Use of lactitol in pediatric patients has not been established.
  • Use of lactitol during pregnancy and lactation should be done only if the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks.

Contraindication

Lactitol is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to lactitol or any component of the product.
