Ispaghula Husk

Ispaghula husk is a natural fiber supplement derived from the seeds of the Plantago ovata plant. It belongs to the class of drugs called bulk-forming laxatives and works by absorbing water in the intestine, forming a bulky mass and promoting bowel movements.

Ispaghula husk is indicated for the treatment of constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and other gastrointestinal disorders associated with a lack of dietary fiber.

The recommended dose of Ispaghula husk is 1 to 3 teaspoons (3 to 10 grams) per day, mixed with water or other fluids. The medication should be taken with plenty of water to avoid the risk of intestinal obstruction. The dose may be adjusted based on the individual's response to treatment.

Common side effects of Ispaghula husk include-

  • abdominal bloating
  • cramps
  • flatulence

  • Ispaghula husk should be used with caution in patients with a history of intestinal obstruction, inflammatory bowel disease, or difficulty swallowing.
  • Patients taking the medication should be advised to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration and should be monitored for signs of intestinal obstruction, especially if they have a history of bowel disorders.

Contraindication

Ispaghula husk is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in the formulation.

Ispaghula husk should not be used in patients with-

  • intestinal perforation
  • obstruction
  • megacolon
