Benzalkonium Chloride

Benzalkonium Chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound that functions as a disinfectant and antiseptic. It works by disrupting and damaging the cell membrane of microorganisms, leading to their death.

 

Benzalkonium Chloride is indicated for use as a topical antiseptic and disinfectant to prevent and treat skin infections in cuts and scraps caused by bacteria and fungi. It is also used as a preservative in various topical and ophthalmic preparations.

 

Benzalkonium Chloride should be applied to the affected area, as directed by the healthcare provider or as per the product labeling. It should be used in the recommended amount and frequency, and the affected area should be allowed to dry before applying other topical products.

 

Benzalkonium chloride may cause the following side effects-

  • Skin irritation, including redness, itching, and burning
  • Dryness and cracking of the skin

 

  • Benzalkonium Chloride is for external use only and should not be ingested or applied to the eyes or mucous membranes.
  • It may cause skin irritation and allergic reactions, and should be discontinued if such reactions occur.
  • The use of Benzalkonium Chloride in children and pregnant or breastfeeding women should be done under medical supervision.
  • Benzalkonium Chloride can be toxic if ingested and may cause severe symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and breathing difficulties. In case of ingestion, medical attention should be sought immediately.

 

Contraindication

Benzalkonium Chloride should not be used in individuals with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug or any of its ingredients. 

 

Benzalkonium Chloride should also not be used in individuals with severe skin conditions or open wounds.
