Finasteride

Finasteride belongs to the class of 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. Finasteride inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a potent androgen. By reducing DHT levels in the prostate, finasteride helps in the management of conditions associated with prostate enlargement, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Finasteride prescribed for the management of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia).

  • Finasteride may be administered with or without meals.
  • One tablet (1 mg) taken once daily.
  • In general, daily use for three months or more is necessary before benefit is observed.

Adverse reactions associated with finasteride are listed below-

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Decreased libido
  • Ejaculation disorders
  • Finasteride is not approved for utilization in women or pediatric patients.
  • Pregnant women or those potentially pregnant should avoid handling crushed or broken Finasteride tablets due to potential risks to a male fetus.
  • Finasteride induces a reduction in serum PSA levels. Any verified elevation in PSA levels during Finasteride use may indicate the possible presence of prostate cancer and warrants evaluation, even if the values remain within the normal range for men not using a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor.
  • The use of 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors may elevate the risk of high-grade prostate cancer.
