Drospirenone

Drospirenone is a synthetic progestin and a spironolactone analogue. Drospirenone exerts its contraceptive effects through a combination of progestogenic and antiandrogenic activities. It acts by inhibiting ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to prevent sperm penetration, and altering the endometrium to reduce the likelihood of implantation.

 

Drospirenone is indicated for Prevention of pregnancy.

 

Chew one tablet (do not swallow whole) taken daily for 28 days; one white breast pain, weight increased, dysmenorrhea, nausea, vaginal hemorrhage, active chewable tablet daily during the first 24 days and one green inert libido decreased, breast tenderness, menstruation irregular chewable tablet daily during the 4 following days

Drospirenone Chewable Tablets consists of 28 tablets in the following order : 

  • 24 white active chewable tablets each containing 3.5 mg of drospirenone
  • 4 green inert chewable tablets

 

The following side effects may occur with the use of drosiprenone-

  • Irregular menstrual bleeding or spotting
  • Headache
  • Breast pain or tenderness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Mood changes or depressive symptoms
  • Acne
  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue
  • Vaginal yeast infections

 

  • Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events, especially in women over 35 years of age. Drospirenone should not be used by women who smoke and are over 35 years old.
  • Drospirenone is contraindicated in women with a history of blood clots, certain types of cancer, liver disease, or uncontrolled hypertension.
  • Women with a history of cholestatic jaundice during pregnancy or previous hormonal contraceptive use should be closely monitored while using drospirenone.
  • The use of drospirenone may increase the risk of venous and arterial thrombotic and thromboembolic events. Patients should be informed of the signs and symptoms of these events and advised to seek medical attention if necessary.
  • Drospirenone may increase serum potassium levels. It should be used with caution in patients with conditions that may predispose them to hyperkalemia.
  • Women using drospirenone should undergo regular monitoring of blood pressure and other relevant laboratory tests as recommended by their healthcare provider.

 

Contraindication

Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component of the formulation.

Drospirenone is contraindicated in the following conditions-

  • Renal impairment 
  • Adrenal insufficiency
  • Presence or history of progestin sensitive cancers
  • Liver tumors, benign or malignant, or hepatic impairment
  • Undiagnosed abnormal uterine bleeding
