Doxycycline Hydrochloride
Doxycycline hydrochloride is a broad spectrum antibiotic of tetracycline group. It kills bacteria by inhibiting their protein synthesis.
Doxycycline hydrochloride is indicated in the following diseases-
- Bronchitis, Tonsillitis, Influenza, Sinusitis, Tracheitis.
- Chlamydia infections.
- Malaria.
- Cholera, Traveler's diarrhea, Shigella dysentery.
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Impetigo, furunculosis, inclusion conjunctivitis, brucellosis, tularemia, cellulitis, acne and Q-fever.
The usual dose is 200 mg on first day, then 100 mg daily for 7-10 days.
Patient should be careful so that he/she does not take expired medicine. Expired doxycycline is highly hepatotoxic and can even be fatal.
Contraindication
- Patients who are hypersensitive to doxycycline hydrochloride or any drug of tetracycline class should not take doxycycline.
- Children under 12 years should not be prescribed doxycycline.
Doxycycline should not be taken with milk, antacids or mineral supplements.
