Dimenhydrinate

Dimenhydrinate is an antihistamine that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body.

Dimenhydrinate is indicated for the following conditions associated with motion sickness-

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Take dimenhydrinate 30 to 60 minutes before flying or engaging in any activity that may cause motion sickness for the best effects.
  • The tablet should be chewed and not swallowed.

Side effects associated with dimenhydrinate include-

  • drowsiness/ dizziness
  • dry mouth, nose, or throat;
  • constipation;
  • blurred vision; or
  • feeling restless or excited (especially in children).

Precautions should be exercised if the user has the following conditions-

  • Patient with history of
    • asthma or lower respiratory tract symptoms (e.g. emphysema, chronic bronchitis)
    • angle-closure glaucoma
    • prostatic hypertrophy
    • bladder neck obstruction
    • stenosing peptic ulcer,
    • pyloroduodenal obstruction
    • cardiovascular disease (e.g. cardiac arrhythmias, hypertension, ischemic heart disease)
    • seizure
    • thyroid dysfunction.
  • Children
  • Pregnancy and lactation
  • Hepatic impairment.

Contraindication

Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to dimenhydrinate or other components of the medicine.

There is no contraindications of dimenhydrinate in terms of food and drinks.

Patients with the following health conditions are contraindicated-

  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Glaucoma
  • Hypertension
  • stenosing peptic ulcer
  • blockage of the urinary bladder
  • enlarged prostate
  • an inability to completely empty the bladder
  • chronic idiopathic constipation
