Doxycycline + Oxytetracycline

Doxycycline and Oxytetracycline are broad-spectrum antibiotics that belong to the tetracycline class. They work by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, specifically by binding to the bacterial ribosome, preventing the addition of amino acids to the growing peptide chain.

Doxycycline and Oxytetracycline are indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible microorganisms in various animal species. These infections include respiratory, urinary tract, and gastrointestinal infections, as well as infections of the skin and soft tissues. They are also used for the prevention and treatment of bacterial enteritis, leptospirosis, anaplasmosis, and other tick-borne diseases.

The dosage and administration for Doxycycline and Oxytetracycline may vary depending on the animal species, the severity of the infection, and other factors. It is important to follow the veterinarian's instructions regarding dosage and duration of treatment. The medication is usually administered orally or intravenously, and the dosage may be adjusted based on the animal's weight.

The following adverse reactions may occur in animals treated with Doxycycline and Oxytetracycline:

  • Gastrointestinal upset, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Tooth discoloration in young animals
  • Photosensitivity
  • Superinfection with resistant organisms
  • Immunosuppression
  • Renal toxicity

  • Do not use in pregnant animals, as tetracyclines may cross the placenta and cause skeletal deformities in the fetus.
  • Do not use in young animals under 6 months of age, as tetracyclines can cause permanent tooth discoloration and affect bone growth.
  • Use with caution in animals with liver or kidney disease, as tetracyclines may cause renal toxicity.
  • Use with caution in animals with a history of seizures or neurological disorders, as tetracyclines may increase the risk of seizures.
  • Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to tetracyclines.

Contraindication

Doxycycline and Oxytetracycline are contraindicated in animals with known hypersensitivity to tetracyclines. They should not be used in pregnant animals or young animals under 6 months of age.
