Azelastine + Fluticasone Propionate

Azelastine + Fluticasone Propionate is a combination medication of azelastine hydrochloride- an antihistamine and fluticasone propionate, a corticosteroid. It is available as metered dose nasal spray.

Azelastine + Fluticasone Propionate is a prescription medicine used to treat the symptoms of-

  • Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis
  • The recommended dosage is 1 spray in each nostril twice daily.
  • Prime the medication before initial use by releasing 6 sprays or until a fine mist appears. When Azelastine + Fluticasone Propionate has not been used for 14 or more days, reprime with 1 spray or until a fine mist appears.

Commonly associated side effects include-

  • Epistaxis
  • Headache
  • Dysgeusia/ Taste disturbances
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Clinically significant medication interactions have been reported in patients receiving fluticasone propionate and ritonavir during post-marketing usage, resulting in systemic corticosteroid effects such as Cushing's syndrome and adrenal suppression. As a result, using fluticasone propionate and ritonavir at the same time should be avoided unless the patient's potential benefit surpasses the risk of systemic corticosteroid adverse effects.
  • Nasal corticosteroids can have systemic effects, especially when given in high doses for lengthy periods of time.
  • Because Azelastine + Fluticasone Propionate Nasal Spray undergoes considerable first-pass metabolism, intranasal fluticasone propionate exposure in patients with severe liver disease is expected to be higher. This could lead to an increase in the number of systemic adverse events.
  • Children taking approved levels of nasal corticosteroids have shown signs of growth retardation. Because teenage growth is influenced by nasal corticosteroids, it is advised that the growth of adolescents receiving long-term nasal corticosteroids be closely monitored.
  • Patients with a change in vision or a history of increased ocular pressure, glaucoma, or cataracts should be closely monitored.
The potential benefits of Azelastine + Fluticasone Propionate Nasal Spray treatment should be considered against the potential risks in patients who have tuberculosis, any type of untreated illness, or who have recently undergone a surgical operation or injury to the nose or mouth.
