Nystatin

Nystatin is polyene antifungal agent. It is available as oral suspension, vaginal tablet and cream for topical administration.

The prevention and treatment of candida infections of the oral cavity, esophagus and intestinal tract. The suspension provides effective prophylaxis against oral Candidiasis in those born of mothers with vaginal Candidiasis.

  • Adults: 1 ml of the suspension should be dropped into the mouth four times daily for the treatment of denture sores and oral infections caused by C.albicans in adults; it should be kept in touch with the affected areas as long as possible.
  • Children: For intestinal and oral candidiasis (thrush), 1 ml should be placed into the mouth four times a day in infants and children. The greater the effect, the longer the suspension is kept in touch with the affected area in the mouth before swallowing.
    The recommended dose for neonatal prophylaxis is 1 mL once daily.

Commonly associated side effects associated with nystatin oral suspension include-

  • Nausea
  • Rash
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Urticaria
  • Sucrose is present in Nystatin Oral Suspension.
  • This medicine should not be used by people who have a rare inherited condition with fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption, or sucrase-iso maltase insufficiency.
  • Small levels of ethanol (alcohol) are present in this therapeutic preparation, less than 100 mg per dose.
  • This medicine contains the ingredients methyl para hydroxy benzoate (E218) and propyl para hydroxy benzoate (E216), which might cause adverse responses in some people (possibly delayed).
  • Systemic mycoses should not be treated with nystatin oral formulations.

Contraindication

Hypersensitivity to the active substance(s) or to any of the excipients.
