Mebhydrolin

Mebhydrolin is classified as an antihistamine. Its mechanism of action involves blocking the effects of histamine, a natural substance in the body that is responsible for various allergic reactions. Mebhydrolin competes with histamine for H1-receptor sites on effector cells in the respiratory tract, blood vessels, and gastrointestinal tract, thereby alleviating symptoms associated with histamine release.

Mebhydrolin is indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with allergic conditions, such as:

  • Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
  • Allergic conjunctivitis
  • Allergic dermatitis
  • Urticaria (hives)

The dosage of Mebhydrolin may vary based on the age and specific medical condition of the patient. The following are general guidelines:

  • Adults and Adolescents (12 years and older): The typical oral dose is 25 to 50 mg every 4 to 6 hours as needed for allergy symptoms.
  • Children (6 to 12 years): The recommended oral dose is 12.5 to 25 mg every 4 to 6 hours as needed.
  • Children (2 to 6 years): The recommended oral dose is 6.25 to 12.5 mg every 4 to 6 hours as needed.

Common adverse reactions associated with Mebhydrolin include:

  • Drowsiness or sedation
  • Dry mouth
  • Blurred vision
  • Constipation
  • Urinary retention
  • CNS Depression: Mebhydrolin may cause central nervous system (CNS) depression, leading to impaired mental and physical abilities. Caution is advised when operating machinery or performing tasks requiring mental alertness.
  • Alcohol and CNS Depressants: Concurrent use of Mebhydrolin with alcohol or other CNS depressants may enhance the depressant effects and should be avoided.

Contraindication

Mebhydrolin is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to the drug or its components.

Mebhydroline should not be used in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention, severe hypertension, or during an acute asthma attack.
