Cefuroxime + Clavulanic Acid

Cefuroxime + Clavulanic acid is a combination of cephalosporin antibiotic and beta lactamase inhibitor. It kills bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis. It is a bactericidal antibiotic.

This medication is indicated for the following infections caused by susceptible organisms-

  • Tonsilitis
  • Sinusitis
  • Pneumonia
  • Bronchitis
  • Skin infections
  • Bone infections
  • Sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Meningitis
  • Lyme disease
  • Septicemia

Cefuroxime is available as tablets, IV infusion and Powder for suspension. The usual dosage For adolescents & adults is 200-500mg for 10-14 days. It can vary depending on the type and severity of infections.

Foe pediatric patients, the usual dose is 20-30mg/kg for up to 10 days.

How to reconstitute cefuroxime+clavulanic acid powder for suspension:

The side effects associated with cefuroxime is usually mild. The common side effects include-

  • Rash
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Pruritus 
  • Renal problems
  • Prolonged use of cefuroxime may cause the overgrowth of resistant organisms and cause super infection.
  • Patient who are on diuretics like and have a history of colitis should be careful while taking cefuroxime.
  • Drug that lowers stomach acidity such as omeprazole, may impair Cefuroxime bioavailability and neutralize the impact of postprandial absorption.

Contraindication

Cefuroxime is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to any beta lactam antibiotics such as-
